Birthdate and place taken from the following census: 1) 1860 Census Shelby Co, AL; Sterretts, page 456, line 34; dated 28 Jul 2) 1870 Census Shelby Co, AL; Hillsboro, page 504B, line 1; dated 24 Aug 3) 1880 Census Lamar Co, AL; Beaverton, Tw p 13, R 15; Beat 8; Dwlg. 182, Fam. 179; dated 22 Jun. All census detailed under her husband, Hugh Isbell. They lived around Dunnavant while in Shelby County. Her grandson, Wm. Isom Isbell, said that Eliza was part Cherokee Indian. Can this be proved? The marriage is recorded in Volume 1, page 305. They lived around Dunnavant in Shelby County. Elizabeth F. Isbell, age 83, was living with her youngest son, Abe, in 1910 in Jefferson County when the census was taken. Juanita said the little girl in the picture with Eliza is Abe's daughter, Mae. A death certificate is in the possession of Pat Brown. It is very uninformative, probably because it was filled out by the undertaker! Her parents were not mentioned! She is buried in Mt. Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery without a marker.

In proving the parentage of Eliza, the following reasoning is used: Eliza's grandaughter, Bee Jane Palmer, said that her grandmother and her Uncle Dick Holmes were brother and sister. Bee Jane was an adult when they died and this relationsh ip was common knowledge. Dick was a nickname used for Elias. In 1850 he is listed in the household of his parents, James and Mary Holmes in Shelby County, AL. E. Holmes was listed in the 1870 Census Sanford (Lamar) County, AL with wife, Josephi ne. Then in 1880 he is listed as Elias S. Holmes with wife, Josephine. Since Eliza and Hugh were married in 1848, Eliza was not listed with her parents in 1850, although she and Hugh were also in Shelby County. If Dick (Elias) is the son of Jame s and Mary, then it follows that Eliza is their daughter since Miss Bee Jane said Dick and Eliza were brother and sister. In 1870 Pollie Holmes, age 66, was living next door to Eliza and Hugh in Shelby County. In 1880 Lamar County, Mary, age 76, was living in the house with Elias and Josephine. She was listed as the mother of Elias.

Eliza, as the widow of Hugh, sold land in October 1894 (Deed & Mortgage Book 8, page 388, Lamar County, AL). Need to find out when this land was bought.

child + 6 v. Elias S. 'Dick' Holmes was born circa 1835.
